The Mother
Saray is the oldest Turkish restaurant of Amsterdam. It has developed itself since 1976 into a international meetingplace where friends and families, young and old, new and regular customers come together and feel at home. The name Saray comes from ‘karavanserai’, it’s a safe place to sleep for traveling traders alongside the silk route. Mother Senem and father Ibrahim were inspired. Mother based her kitchen of the old Anatolic traditions and followed the traditional recepies and preperations. She thought that dishes should be simple and tastful with a warm atmosphere and lots of music. Her dishes that she made with love made a big impression with the population of Amsterdam. Mother Senem is still remembered by our customers with warm story’s till this day.
Turkish music
Who walks into Saray today will still fel the cosy atmosphere that mother Senem implemented. There is a light smell of fired wood from our woodoven in the air where we make alot of our dishes. You will dine between the changing expositions of multiple artists from Amsterdam. We often organise special theme evenings where you can experience the Art & Dining event. Usually the evening of Saray will be closed off with Turkish music from the owner who will play on his Turkish guitar the ‘saz’.
Authentic kitchen
Our kitchen is specialized in the charcoal grill and the woodoven dishes. Aside from the trusted dishes from the grill, we can surprise you with season dishes of fish, meat or vegetarian dishes. Fresh ingredients have a high priority in our restaurant so we can prepare the best dish possible.
Modern
Saray has expanded since 2013 and was renewed with oversight by our trusted customer and passionated architect Erik van Dillen. The appearance is now modern Turkish which is also often found in the big city’s of Turkey. Saray dares to be the pioneer when it comes to renovation. It’s not a coincidence that Saray is called ‘The mother of Turkish restaurants in Amsterdam’.
